New York City is indubitably the center of American theater. New outstanding productions grace the stages of Broadway every season, and it can be difficult to keep up with what's happening next. In this post, I've given an overview of a production I dearly wish I could see— Cat on a Hot Tin Roof , starring Scarlett Johansson and Ciarán Hinds.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams is an award-winning American playwright whose other works include A Streetcar Named Desire and Orpheus Descending . Arguably the most important American playwright in history, Tennessee Williams budget tour operators wrote tales of passion and repression, set in the Deep South during the 1940s and 1950s. During his lifetime, he won a Tony Award and two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, one of which was for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
This production, which runs through March 30, 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, stars Scarlett Johansson ( The Avengers , The Prestige ) as Maggie, the play's heroine; Benjamin Walker ( Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ) as her husband Brick Pollitt, a repressed homosexual; Ciarán Hinds ( Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ; HBO's Rome ) as Brick's father Big Daddy Pollitt, the family patriarch, whose health is failing; and Debra Monk as Big Momma, the family's matriarch. The play itself explores the complex budget tour operators and often deceitful relationships between these characters during the course of an evening at Big Daddy's plantation home in the Mississippi Delta. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was Tennessee Williams's favorite of his own works, budget tour operators and its many revivals have received excellent reviews over several decades.
