For a long time, Europe has been romanticised as a traveller's destination. During the 18th Century, privileged young Englishmen took time between a university education and the beginning of their professional career travelling through continental Europe. The 'Grand Tour' is a British invention; Britain at this time was the wealthiest nation in the world and had a large upper class with both the time and the money to travel. The modern equivalent is the Gap Year, and with budget flights and backpackers' hostels now commonplace, it is not only the wealthy and the privileged who are able to afford this often life-changing experience.
My own grand tour was in the summer of 2001. Like many gap year students, I arrived in continental Europe with a meagre budget, a few months to spare and an insatiable appetite to visit some of the great capitals of the world. The result was a blur of overnight train journeys, Spartan meals comprised of supermarket fare, and a woefully inadequate amount of time spent in each location. The problem of course is that each target is more appealing than the last; Amsterdam, Berlin, Madrid, Lisbon: unwilling to compromise on an abridged list of destinations, we settled on seeing a little of everything, and ended up seeing not much of anything.
In my experience, a small tour that focuses on just a couple cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean of highlights will leave you with a better set of memories. cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean Choose just two or three cities from your list, and spend longer in each place to get a real feel of Europe. My own recommendation is 'Le Petit Tour': London to Paris by train.
A highly international and modern city with a wealth of historical landmarks, London is the perfect place for a European trip to begin. London has a culture cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean of world-class theatre, cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean and some of the smaller playhouses like "The Young Vic" offer reduced entry to many shows. cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean Check our website for theatre tickets and things to do in London . Stroll around the indoor and outdoor markets like Borough Market and Spitalfields Market, and of course no visit to London is complete without a tour of its pubs. Travellers on a budget should favour Sam Smiths pubs which offer a decent pint at a reasonable price, cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean often in a grand setting. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese at 145 Fleet Street and Cittie of Yorke at 22 High Holborn are personal favourites.
Budget airlines EasyJet and Ryanair normally make flying the most economical option, but regular trains from London to Paris are, in my view, a more romantic way to travel. Get a feel for the British and French countryside from the comfort of your train compartment, with a drink in hand. The Eurostar from St Pancras arrives in Gare du Nord in the heart of Paris, and from there it is a short hop on the Metro to the city's extensive cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean accommodations. Check our website for information on the range of hotels and hostels available. First-time visitors to Paris are unlikely to want to miss the classic sights: the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre are all worth a visit. But if you stay longer, you can delve a bit deeper into the treasures on offer. Check out the inexpensive Japanese Garden at the Alfred Kahn museum in Boulogne Billancourt, and the palatial ruins of Le Parc de Saint Cloud. Europe's biggest flea market, Les Marches aux Puces could easily take up a whole day if, like me, you find yourself unable to resist rifling cruise ships dumping trash in the ocean through Parisian detritus (not all of it junk). With time to spare, you'll find your own treasured parts of the city, and you won't feel like you're racing against the clock either.
