Let me begin by saying that Fairmont is my hotel chain of choice. I have stayed at many Fairmont properties over the years and am generally loyal to them. My experience fort lauderdale plaza hotel at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn Spa was not the Fairmont standard I am used to. I recently fort lauderdale plaza hotel got married and was so looking forward to my honeymoon stay at this hotel. I could not have been more disappointed. It was truly horrible. We planned to arrive via the Santa Rosa Airport as it seemed closer than either Sacramento or San Franciso. I couldn't find much information on the airport so I called the concierge at the hotel asking the best way to get to the hotel. fort lauderdale plaza hotel Most Fairmonts seem to have hotel shuttles so I assumed that the hotel would pick me up. The concierge told me I should rent a car. Keep in mind that they pick up at both San Franciso Airport and Sacramento Airport and Santa Rosa is much closer than each. I also asked for directions to the French Laundry restaurant and the concierge interrupted me by rudely stating "You need to reserve that restaurant months in advance, getting a reservation there is extremely difficult." Little did she know that I already had a reservation. She failed to answer my question and was rude in the process. Anyhow, we arrived at the hotel on December 1st, looking forward to a great stay. The outside was beautiful, albeit in a fairly poor area of Sonoma, and we walked around the beautiful grounds until we found our room. Upon walking in we could not have been more disappointed. It was old, small, and dark, and - here's the kicker - didn't have a bathtub! We were checked in for 6 nights fort lauderdale plaza hotel and I can not imagine not having a nice soak in a tub for 6 nights. I called down to the front desk, explained my problem to 2 different people before being transferred to a third, the gentleman who checked us in. I asked if I might move to a room with a bathtub fort lauderdale plaza hotel and he responded that we had already been "upgraded" for our honeymoon. If that room was an upgrage, Vegas would have gone out of business a long time ago! I replied that I wasn't looking for an upgrade, I just really needed a room with a bathtub. He said that my room type didn't have bathtubs and that we could move to the presidential suite for $75 more per night. I hung up the phone and started to cry - my romantic honeymoon had started off so badly. My new husband then told me that he had called ahead weeks ago and asked for Champagne, roses and chocolate strawberries to be in the room upon our arrival and was told that the hotel did not do that - he had to wait until we were actually in the room to have it delivered. My husband, the sweet man that he is, didn't want to see me upset, so he called down to the front desk as well, and again was transferred three times until he reached someone who would assist us. He explained that all he needed was a room with a bathtub. Keep in mind that the hotel was 20% occupied (as explained to us by the staff member who checked us in when asked if the hotel was busy). My husband was told that someone would have to call him back. Ten minutes later we were informed that yes, there was a room with a bathtub available and that someone would arrive to bring our luggage and new keys to us. Half an hour later, a staff member came and moved us three doors down! I have never in my life been through fort lauderdale plaza hotel so much hassle just to get a room with a bathtub! The room we were transferred to was much nicer, but there were cracks in the tile, the water pressure was terrible and there were two queen beds instead of one king. Oh well - at least there was a bathtub! We decided to explore the property and check out the dining options. There is Sante, the Michelin rated restaurant, a very small Lobby Bar, and the Big 3 Restaurant and Wine Bar. The photo of the Big 3 online is perhaps the most misleading photo I have ever seen. It depicts an open window, a beautiful table set with wine glasses and delicious food and a peaceful fort lauderdale plaza hotel ambience and decor. fort lauderdale plaza hotel What they don't depict is that you have to walk through the gift shop to get a seat here - the food, decor and ambience are no better than a truck stop greasy-spoon. The tables are covered in white parchment paper instead of cloth, the seats are that awful Dennys-esque plastic, upholstered with some awful design, and the "wine bar" is a bar installed in the back of the gift shop. The upside is that the Food and Beverage staff are very friendly, fort lauderdale plaza hotel the food in the Lobby Bar is really good, and the outdoor grounds are quite beautiful. The area around the hotel is a bad part of town and we did not feel safe walking around it. We met some locals who also told us it was not safe to walk around. (I will also mention that the hotel does not have inside bolt locks that you can utilize - you have to rely on the outside fort lauderdale plaza hotel key-card lock). fort lauderdale plaza hotel As a result we felt stuck on the property. We found out after we left that the hotel has a shuttle available to take you into town and that there was a geothermal pool in the hotel. These things would have been nice to know but the staff did not keep us informed or give us any information whatsoever about the activities or amenities on property. Such a disappointing stay. The upside is that the Food and Beverage staff are very friendly, fort lauderdale plaza hotel the food in the Lobby Bar is really good, and the outdoor grounds are quite beautiful. We decided to check out after only two nights instead of the 7 we were checked in for. We phoned down in the evening to inquire about checking out early the next day, the front desk girl simply replied that we could. No one made any effort to assertain why we would be checking out early or if there was anything they could do to make our stay more enjoyable. When we actually did check out we were met with another employee who again did not care to ask why were checking out early. Perhaps if the employees cared more for their guests needs or there was a visible management presence our stay would have been better.
