We came into Washington DC area during the early evening. Traffic was clogged, but not nearly as bad as in Philadelphia. We got to our address only to find an auto shop in a sketchy part of town. We called our contact only to get his answering message, so we were skeptical. We were just looking around trying to figure out what to do, when we heard Natural Horns! coming from an upstairs window. We got directions to get in.
The venue, Hole In The Sky, is what you could call a house venue. In reality, 6 people rent the apartment miami apartment rentals with 2 more renting studio space there. It has a ridiculously huge room, which was mostly empty. There was plenty of room on one side for as big of a stage as you could need. The walls were white with different art hanging from it. Looking around, I saw several objects: bikes and bike parts, an agonizingly out-of-tune piano, and what I believe was a printing press. They also had a huge roof adjacent to the apartment. There were a few garden beds, including plants growing out of a repurposed toilet. miami apartment rentals They had a picnic table with a janky bench, miami apartment rentals a barrel for cigarette butts, and a tall bike. I was getting a better vibe every time I turned the corner.
After what seemed like not too long, a number of people had congregated. Justin made pasta (from scratch!) and Annie made the salad. People ate, drank, and talked. Eventually the first act got set up. They moved out the piano and David played his set. There was a lot of instrumental piano and he sang as well. There were a ton of short songs (shortened?) and the crowd was really attentive.
Next up was Pony Bones, a 3-piece band with cello, acoustic guitar, and tastefully quiet drums played miami apartment rentals with brushes. They had some damn good songs, with instrumental bits that I was grooving miami apartment rentals to. Then for the last few songs of their set, they swapped the cello for a synth and the acoustic guitar for an electric. Instant rock band!
It was around then that we got set up. Like I said earlier, I hadn t been nervous for a long time until that radio show last week. However, seeing this group of people enjoying the music so much and listening so attentively, I couldn t stop myself from getting a bit of those flutters. It was a good feeling. I warmed up and got the stands ready to go on stage. Pony Bones finished and announced we were up next.
They teared down (a little), we set up, and sound checked with I Wanna Live In The Countryside. People started miami apartment rentals coming in, and then after the sound check someone shouted for the rest of the roof people.
We started with My Ohio, which is one of the ones I have been soloing on lately. I feel like I did a pretty good one, and Annie and I each earned some shouts and claps. We went into the Thank You Never Die Pacific Coast medley and I could see and hear the effect that we had on people. Every time we did something cool that we arranged long ago, they reacted with excitement. It was quite something to see so many people reacting so positively to our music. That made ME, and probably Elia and Anne too, react with better stage presence and musicality. We got calls for an encore far before we were even finished, so of course we kept going. After our supposed last song, we got called back for a real encore this time. We played one, and another at their request. Damn, DC! You so fine!
Eventually another song was requested, but I just couldn t hold my pee anymore. I ran to the bathroom while Elia played Styrofoam Boots by Modest Mouse. When I came back, everyone was really into it. Obviously many people had heard the song, and were singing along. When it got to an intense part and I gauged the mood of the crowd to be danceable, Annie and I ran into the circle to start a light mosh pit. Everyone reacted exactly the way I intended increased excitement, energy, dancing, smiles. It was fun seamlessly becoming part of the crowd during the very set I had just played.
Finally, our set was actually over. The house music went back on (dance music for the people who still had energy) and most everyone went outside. We were the last band, so lots of the folks left. We all just chilled and talked for a while till bed time.
Looking at this show now, and even just after it, I think it was one of the best ones I ve ever played. The crowd was phenomenal. The energy was terrific. I know it was a product of each and every person in the crowd and each of us on stage coming miami apartment rentals together in such a great space full of creativity. I couldn t believe how many people were seriously interested in our music. It seemed genuine and true. I was sincerely miami apartment rentals impressed by the love shown by the crowd. miami apartment rentals I actually teared up at one point, but just for a second.
