The attack resulted in the death of five people, with others injured and kidnapped. Any Canadian citizens already in the Danakil Depression, bounded by but not including the Dessie-Adigrat road, the Dessie-Djibouti road, and the Ethio-Eritrean border, should re-evaluate their continued presence in the region. Similarly, the presence of landmines poses a serious threat to visitors not travelling with a trusted tour company. Explosions off the beaten path may cause injuries and death. Armed assaults against tourists and convoys have also been reported in the past, notably in 2007 when 18 people were kidnapped. In 2008, an attempted kidnapping of a large group of tourists was thwarted by the Ethiopian government. Armed guards, therefore, accompany all tour groups. Border with Eritrea The border between Eritrea and Ethiopia is closed due to recurring military tensions and an unsettled border dispute, as demonstrated on March 15, 2012 when the Ethiopian military attacked cheapest car rentals targets in Eritrea. Although foreigners do not appear to be targeted, Canadians in the area could still be affected as tensions are high and concerns regarding ethnic clashes and road banditry remain.
