When Rick Litchfield and Bev Davis bought the Captain Lord Mansion in 1978, it was a home for genteel virtual tours real estate in utah elderly ladies. Neither Litchfield nor Davis had any experience in running a bed-and-breakfast, yet this year the husband-and-wife team are celebrating 30 years as innkeepers.
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the 16-room Captain Lord Mansion sits on an acre of land near Maine s Kennebunk River. The inn is a member of the Distinguished Inns of North America and is AAA four-star rated.
The mansion was built by architect Thomas Eaton in 1812 as a private home for shipbuilder Nathaniel Lord and his prodigious family, and has since been completely restored by Litchfield and Davis (the fireplace in the gathering room is the original cooking fireplace from 1812, and the Chippendale dining-room set actually belonged to the Lords).
Davis personally chose the opulent d cor of the rooms, each of which also comes with such amenities as bathrobes, down comforters and stationery. Most of the rooms have four-poster queen-size canopy beds, gas fireplaces, mini fridges, cedar closets and bathrooms with marble showers and/or virtual tours real estate in utah tubs with massage jets as well as heated floors.

Litchfield and Davis are both former advertising executives Davis was once an advertising manager for McDonald s Corporation but in a complete renunciation of any lingering sympathy for the McDonald s ethos, breakfast at the mansion is served in three courses and in the dining room only.
The first course is a choice of fresh fruit, yogurt, or granola. Warm muffins, bread or pastries baked on site that morning are then offered, followed by a main course that changes daily blueberry pancakes, stuffed French toast, souffl or a frittata are some of the possibilities. There s also a daily afternoon tea with fresh-baked snacks, iced tea and lemonade.
Outside, in the Memory Garden, paving stones are engraved with the names of all guests upon their 10th visit. Guests who visited during the 2003 anniversary year will also receive a glass mallard inscribed with verse written by the couple.
Room rates vary by size, location and day of the week. Ophelia ranges from $166 to $329 per night, Hesper from $166 to $319, and the inn s version of a presidential suite, the Merchant Captain s Suite, from $299 to $499. For more information, call the Captain Lord at 800-522-3141.
