My "YaYa" Sisters and I have often fantasized about choosing a cruise line over a "retirement" home. Why not? The idea is not that far-fetched! A one-bedroom apartment in a semi-assisted-living vacation packages to maui facility can run as much as $250 per day – about the same price as a private cabin on a cruise ship – or even half that if sharing. Wouldn't it be more fun to cruise the world rather than look out the same window at the same view day after day?
No – we're not talking about doing the same 7-day cruise over and over instead – to book a series of back-to-backs – say, cruise from Galveston to Rome or Barcelona – sail around the Mediterranean for a while – catch a repositioning to Asia – then on to Australia New Zealand – Tahiti – just imagine.
No grocery shopping – no cooking no cleaning – no windstorm or homeowner insurance no car expense– no utilities – no property taxes and if a TV or even a light bulb goes out maintenance will quickly fix the problem and apologize for the inconvenience! Of course, wine and chocolate martinis are not included (with our group that could run a tidy sum.)
But seriously, it is something to consider. A study published in The American Journal of Geriatrics actually explored the pros and cons of cruise ship retirement and found it to be a viable option for keeping "seniors" active and involved in interests outside vacation packages to maui those found in the average retirement facility. In addition to a variety of opportunities for physical activity – swimming – walking – spa services, etc., simply meeting and interacting with new people of all ages on every sailing could go a long way in keeping ones "gray matter" operational. And, with so much to do, there would be no time to sit around and talk about aches and pains and getting old.
We "YaYa's" have told our children not to look for us in the "old folk's village" – instead to call shore to ship, send us an email or better yet, follow us on Facebook . We'll keep you updated on our daily wheelchair races around the jogging track!
